Guide

Export Fathom transcripts to Markdown

Markdown is the easiest format for Obsidian, Notion imports, Git repos, AI prompts, and long-term text archives. Extract creates readable Markdown files from your Fathom meetings without sending meeting content to a server.

Best for operators, consultants, and researchers who want meeting history in a durable text format.

Workflow

How to do it

  1. Connect Extract to Fathom with your API key.
  2. Filter the meetings you want to convert.
  3. Select transcript, summary, highlights, and action items as needed.
  4. Choose Markdown as an output format.
  5. Export the ZIP and open the generated .md files.
  6. Move the Markdown files into your notes app, repository, or knowledge base.

Manual vs Extract

Where Extract removes the busywork

Manual workflow

  • Copying into Markdown by hand is slow.
  • Manual formatting usually loses metadata and meeting context.
  • Large meeting sets become inconsistent quickly.
  • There is no single index tying files back to meeting dates and titles.

With Extract for Fathom

  • Generate Markdown from many Fathom meetings in one run.
  • Keep transcript, summary, highlights, and action items together.
  • Use readable filenames based on date and title.
  • Keep an index.csv next to the Markdown archive.

Meeting content stays local

Extract's Chrome extension talks directly to Fathom with your API key and builds the export ZIP in your browser. The Rails app only handles license checks, checkout, and anonymous diagnostics. It does not receive transcripts, summaries, highlights, or action items.

Questions

Common questions

Can I use these files in Obsidian?

Yes. The Markdown files are plain local files that can be moved into an Obsidian vault or any folder-based notes system.

Can I export summaries without transcripts?

Yes. Select the content types you want before running the export.
